Great Containers for Food On the GO

Find some great containers for food on the go! Perfect for after school activities and weekend sports events!

If you have a kid in any type of activity, there is a pretty good chance you have experienced the dilemma of transporting food.  I know for me it is always a time thing.  I almost always forget until right before we should be getting in the car that I need to pack something to take with us.  So I have come up with a few solutions for keeping snacks handy and some great containers for food on the go!

All the containers I’m showing you I either got at Walmart or the Dollar Tree.

Jewelry Making Storage Container

This is probably my all time favorite because I can just grab it and go.   I keep it filled with snack items that don’t need to be refrigerated.  I particularly like it because the compartments are long enough for granola and cereal bars.  You just want to make sure it seals well, so the snacks don’t get stale quickly or mix together when you are moving it around. My kids go through the snacks so quickly that I seldom have to worry about them getting stale! 😉

 Compartmentalized Container

This type of container works great for when I want to take a meal with us.  If we are going to gone for an extended period of time, through dinner or lunch, I will pack each kid a small meal.   The compartments make it easy to keep all the food separate.

 Flexible Ice Pack

I know this isn’t a container but having some type of ice pack is important when you are transporting cold items.  I love this particular ice pack because it can bend around the food so easily and is also handy in case there are any injuries!

 Banana Saver

My kids love bananas but I’m always worried about them getting smushed.  My kids hate the “brown spots!” so this container is perfect for keeping the bananas from getting bruised.

I actually found these at the Dollar Tree but you can also get them HERE!

Small Containers with Leak Proof Lids

Having smaller containers comes in handy for things like sauces and dressings.  You can get a pack of them from the dollar store or just save the smaller containers from products you use regularly, like sour cream.

Cooler Bag

I have a few different sizes of cooler bags but my favorite is a medium tote.  I believe it claims to hold 16 cans, so it’s the perfect size for my two girls.  I have a much larger version that I got at the grocery store and it can hold a TON.  The best part about the totes are that they are soft so they fold up nicely.

  1. So I don’t have any kids in sports but I am TOTALLY packing snacks for our vacations in the jewelry making container. That is sooooo smart. I just love creative people who figure out ways to make everyday things work so well. Thanks for sharing these ideas!

  2. I love the creative storage ideas, but would worry about chemicals like BPA leeching into the food long term. The jewelry containers are not food safe, food grade plastic. We have some great containers that I got from Goodbyn. Yes, they are pricey, but oodles of fun to decorate with stickers and come in various sizes. (I’m not paid to say that, just trying to be helpful). Our local Asian supermarket also has mini bento type stackable boxes. And we use the same water filled ice packs, only I have several cut up into smaller sections.

  3. LOVE the jewelry storage container idea. I think I will bring one with me when I go backpacking in Europe this summer to save money (local markets and grocery stores > pricey restaurant snacks, anyone?)

  4. We love Easy Lunchboxes (you can find them here…http://amzn.to/2F8X4eJ) for packing snacks and meals to go. They’re deep enough that they are fairly safe to eat out of in the car as well. Something that works with them, as well as other containers, is to make anything “leak-proof” you just lay some glad press n seal over the top of the container before putting the lid on. That makes enough extra barrier to seal up yogurt, etc. Although we haven’t tried straight up liquids.
