The winter can be hard on our bodies. There are germs floating around everywhere, the air is drier and the daylight is shorter. All of the these factors can make us get sick easier, so it’s important to take extra precautions and insure our families stay healthy (all year round)!
Fortunately, my family is pretty healthy (knock on wood!). We rarely go to the doctor outside of our yearly check-ups and we aren’t on any daily medications. I know what a blessing it is to have healthy kids and I definitely don’t take it for granted. I have a few things that I do to help keep them out of the doctor’s office and at school this time of year.
Here are my TOP 3 FAMILY HEALTH TIPS:
1. SLEEP. It’s so important to get enough sleep. My kids are 6 and 8 years olds but they still have a nightly routine. They know that at 8pm they are expected to take showers and that they need to be in their beds by 8:30. (On nights that they have activities it’s normally later, but with these set expectations it makes it easier to get them in bed at a decent hour.) So even if you have older kids, it’s good to have a set bedtime…that goes for you too! 😉
2. WATER. How much water does your family drink daily? My family drinks a lot! Here’s why…Water is part of our immune system, which helps us fight off illness. We need water to digest our food and get rid of waste. Water is needed for digestion and is the main ingredient in sweat. Every system in our body depends on water. Being hydrated is so important! Even mild dehydration can drain our energy, make us more tired, and susceptible to getting sick.
3. ESSENTIAL OILS. Yes, I just went there. If you are a skeptic or maybe you don’t really know about essential oils (I was BOTH not too long ago), don’t tune me out just yet. I can’t even begin to tell you about all the benefits that my family has seen since we’ve started using them on a daily basis. They are our first line of defense and help keep colds at bay. I honestly haven’t even opened our medicine drawer in months! Here’s a recent example: A few weeks ago I woke up completely congested. I couldn’t breath through my nose and my throat was really sore. I put peppermint (fair warning it’s pretty intense) around where my sinus pressure was and over my forehead, then I added a few drops of Thieves blend to the bottoms of my feet and diffused it for the entire day. Not only did it give me immediate relief but that was the end of my congestion and I never got really sick!
Taking the plunge into essential oils was one simple step that I was reluctant to take, but finally with some prompting from a friend, I decided to dive in and give the oils a try.
